Chapter 18

-Shane-

How could I be totally content with Rachel in my arms while at the same time wanting to kiss her so badly that it’s all I could think about?

The way she melted into me lit my mind on fire with thoughts of us. My brain warned me that us being together hadn’t worked before, but my heart said that we’d grown since then. Things were different. Why not give us a chance?

I kept running my hand through Rachel’s long, thick hair, which I knew she loved, and holding her close as the movie progressed.

A few shouts came from people who noticed the shark fins in the water, and one small boat had someone go over the side, but their friends fished them out before the police had to.

No one was surprised when the rain started. Logan rolled out the tarp roof that could also be used for shade and settled back in with Victoria. He had an arm around her and was absently twirling a lock of her hair in his fingers.

At one point, I caught his eye and gave him a questioning look. He simply shrugged one shoulder as if to say, “it’s all just fun,” and went back to watching the movie.

Who knew Jaws could be romantic?

Well, besides the fact that girls got scared and that meant we boys got to hug them.

That thought hadn’t had the chance to dissipate before I heard a splash nearby. The rain made it difficult to pinpoint the location, but I thought it had come from the other side of our boat.

Another shark attack was brewing on the screen.

Logan glanced over the side, rolled his eyes, then nudged Victoria, and pointed down at the water.

Victoria let out a gasp.

Rachel tensed, and she squirmed in my arms. “What is it?”

“Just a fin,” Logan said.

Victoria scooted closer to Logan.

Small waves rocked us.

Rachel’s muscles remained taut. I reached for her hand, feeling giddy as our fingers slid together, and whispered in her ear. “Should we count how many people scream in the next five minutes?”

A snort escaped from Rachel, and she took a deep breath. “Maybe.”

The guy getting attacked in the cage on screen got a whole lot of screams. We stopped counting at fifty. Then even I got engrossed in the show, which I hadn’t seen in ages. Rachel burrowed into my chest and closed her eyes. I put my hand over her ear and kissed her on the top of the head. It felt good to be able to help her.

Just as the shark took out the back of the boat and started eating the captain guy, water splashed on my arm. I glared at the tarp, expecting to see a hole, but there wasn’t one. I looked at my arm and found it soaked.

“How in the world?” I asked.

At the same moment, Victoria screamed.

Not a surprised and sort of scared sound, like the people around us, but a truly terrified blast that made my head whip toward her.

Instead of her eyes on the screen, they were on me, and she was pointing behind me.
